Naked i Explained

From the Naked i Campaign Director, Amos Ang, "As part of our effort to make an impact for Christ in this generation, we have come up with some tools that we would like to share with you so that you can leverage on them and use them as talking points for spiritual conversations."

How Can We Participate?

  1. Personally participate in this campaign. Give magazine to youths that you know, ask them about the articles that they have read, invite them to a talk, ask them to comment on the short-film, etc.
  2. Partner with us. Campus Crusade is planning to flood the campuses with 150K magazine and organize café types outreaches. Partner with us in co-sponsoring with us to finance these multiple entry points for the pre-believers.
  3. Plan creative evangelistic and pre-evangelistic opportunities. Have your own church outreach to the youth using Café concept, evangelistic small group program ... be creative!

Café Concept

A pre-evangelistic approach comprising various elements like live band, short films and audience interactions as "conversation triggers", designed to give people opportunities to engage one another in their spiritual journeys.

For a more personal and warm atmosphere, ideal crowd size is between 50-75 people. The more audience interaction desired, the smaller the crowd should be.

Photographs for Evangelism?

We may be familiar with music and videos as tools we can use in evangelism, but photographs? How do we use photographs to talk about Jesus? As it turns out, the saying “A picture paints a thousand words” may not be that cliché after all. Photographs communicate - they help give a visual illustration of a story and the emotions within. Take for example, magazines like National Geographic and TIME magazine. The written article tells the story, but the photographs make the story come alive.

In the same way, we harness the power of photographs to help us engage with the stories in people’s lives. Something unique happens when we look at an image. A photo evokes emotions and often stirs up a response in us. It conjures up associations that are as unique as we are because our experience shapes what we see.

And as we’ve found, photos can help people express themselves, and be more open to share their lives and where they are at in their spiritual journeys.

A Pilot Test

One of our teams put this theory to test during a street witnessing session with a tool from the U.S. called Soularium (See www.mysoularium.com). Soularium is basically a pack of 50 different photos, of various themes, accompanied by questions to help facilitate conversations with the pre-believers.

We approached random people along Orchard Road and invited them to help us in our exploration of how people might interpret their lives through images. It was exciting to see how many were open to share their stories with us.

How It Works: Tell Us Your Story

Each person was asked to choose photos in response to the following questions:

    (a) Pick 3 photos to represent your life right now.
    (b) Pick 3 photos to represent what you would like your life to be like.
    (c) Pick 1 photo to represent your idea of who God is to you.

From their responses, we were able to openly discuss life and spiritual issues with friends and even total strangers. We found that we can come alongside people on their spiritual journeys by asking question and genuinely listening to them. From there, it was much easier to, in turn, share our stories and what it is like to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

An Upcoming Tool

Current photo evangelism tools originate in the West and tend to contain many images from Western culture. We are presently working on a similar tool, which will be culturally more relevant to our local community. This package is set to be completed by March 2008 and will be available for use as a creative means to engage people in evangelism.

Using Short Films

Distortions: Are you in love? What is commitment? How do you measure self-worth?

A Sticky Affair: Drugs, alcohol, pills, work and games. We try to kick an addiction by going on to the next. When will we break free from the vicious cycle?

Showhand: "Success, is it just so short lived? Our goals, our aims, do they last? Momentary satisfaction, is that all weíre looking for in life?"

Shoes Anonymous: "Am I enough, am I worth it, am I the person that I wanted to be. Hope, is it out there? Pain, will death take it?" Suicide.
